Portsmouth is an independent city located in the Hampton Roads region of southeastern Virginia. Portsmouth has a population of approximately 96,000 residents spread over 33.2 square miles in a largely urban environment similar to the neighboring cities of Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake and Suffolk.
Founded in 1752, Portsmouth has played a significant role in the shaping of American history, largely due to the strong military presence based at the Portsmouth Naval Medical Center and the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, both of which are located within the city.
Portsmouth Police Department (PPD) is the primary law enforcement authority within the City of Portsmouth, Virginia. PPD maintains a mutual aid pact with neighboring jurisdictions and fosters a progressive working relationship with several additional law enforcement agencies working within its jurisdiction including; Portsmouth Sheriff’s Office, Portsmouth Fire Marshal's Office, VA ABC, Virginia State Police, Virginia Marine Police, Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, United States Navy Police, Federal Protective Service and Department of Defense Police.
